I have been writing for Fenway West for several years now. My FW posts are here, as well as posts about the San Francisco Giants and MLB.
WELCOME!
And Thank You for visiting Sonoma Dave's Giant Red Sox Blog! This blog is an archive of most of my posts on Fenway West. Effective immediately, I will be be including posts about the San Francisco Giants, MLB, and on occasion, stuff that has nothing to do with baseball at all.

Happy Truck Day, Happy Spring
Yeah, I know I'm a bit late for Truck Day. Over here on the Left Coast, things are a bit dry, but warming up nicely. Upper 60s and lower 70s for the next 10 days or so.

The Problem with Subsidizing Huge Stadiums for Billionaire Team Owners
September 13, 2013
The Nation’s
sports editor David Zirin tells Bill that Americans are paying for
expensive new sports stadiums in cities around the country to the
benefit of wealthy team owners, who lobby hard for their construction.
Zirin says the biggest irony is that many fans can’t afford tickets to
major league games, even though they paid for the stadium where their
favorite team plays — never mind those residents who aren’t sports fans.
He points to the Minnesota Twins stadium, opened in 2010, that was “built entirely with public money, even though it had been rejected a dozen times by the voters in various referendum.” Add to that problems that result when tight municipal budgets mean choosing between needed infrastructure projects and new stadiums. In Minnesota, Zirin notes, “the very week they were gonna break ground on the new stadium, the bridge collapsed in Minneapolis, sending about a dozen people to their deaths.”
Tune in this weekend or watch the full interview online.

The New Normal
Robinson Cano and Mariano Rivera are gone. Derek Jeter is old. It's time to accept that 2013 wasn't a fluke: The Yankees aren't good, and they aren't getting better.

Mike Napoli's Beard (Gomes & Victorino on Conan)
Shane Victorino and Jonny Gomes appeared on the Conan O'Brien show. Gomes is weird. Funny, but weird. In this clip, he talks about his relationship, or should I say non-relationship, with Mike Napoli's beard.
At the end of this video, there are links to two more from that show.

Best Red Sox Bar NOT in Boston
Fenway Refugees is taking nominations for Best Red Sox Bar not in Boston. (The Grammar Police is having a head-scratchin' field day with that sentence, AND this one, as well!)
Papi being Manny?
Big Papi blew a head gasket tonight in Baltimore over a high and outside pitch that should have been called ball 4 , but was called a strike. Fenway Refugees reports that when he struck out 2 pitches later, he had some choice words for home plate umpire Tim Timmons, who tossed the big guy after he had returned to the dugout, and after he unleashed all his might upon the dugout telephone. Timmons had been calling a really bad game, and had allowed Ortiz to stay in the game after the verbal assault. Read the full report on Fenway Refugees.

Remember that trade last year?
Three of the four players that the Red Sox shipped out to the Left Coast seem to be doing well, but not ol' Josh Beckett. However, Nick Punto, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez are all stepping up when it comes to offense, and defense as well with only 4 errors total committed by the three players.

Ray of light in the darkness
In these new times of terror and vigilance we live in, it is always like a ray of light in the darkness when we hear and read accounts of heroic deeds such as Bostonians running towards the Marathon explosions rather than away from to help casualties, or Marathon runners continuing running two miles past the finish line to the nearest hospital to donate blood.
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert gave major props to the city and people of Boston on their shows this week.
I was not expecting to see a reference to the Red Sox in Colbert's piece, but when it comes to violence and Boston sports, I could not help but be reminded of the Red Sox- Yankees rivalry and the violence it has spawned. in the past I have called for more peaceful relations between fans of the two times. If Youkilis and Chamberlain can play together on the same team, why certainly we fans can be civil, too. And so I found it heartening to see these memes pass by on my Facebook news feed this week:
Props to the Yankees and their fans and their concern for the people of Boston. Prayers and kind thoughts go out to blast casualties and survivors, their friends and families, and for all in the Boston/Watertown areas who are in a state of lock down until the loser is aprehended.
