Dave Roberts has cancer

Every Sox fan knows who Dave Roberts is. ABC News and ESPN are reporting today that Roberts has Hodgkin's lymphoma. Hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of cancer originating from white blood cells. He was diagnosed in March, it was detected early, and his prognosis is good.

Roberts arrived in Boston in 2004 and although his stay with the Red Sox was short, he will always be remembered for "The Steal of the Century." He was traded to the San Diego Padres to play center field in exchange for Jay Payton. Ironically, he was bumped from center field to left field when the Padres acquired Mike Cameron. Roberts played for the Padres in 2005 and 2006, and the San Francisco Giants in 2007 and 2008. He retired after the 2008 season and worked for NESN in 2009. In 2010 he started working as a special assistaant in the Padres organization.

He is scheduled to talk more about his health later today.

Besides Roberts, Jon Lester is a Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor. Former prospect Anthony Rizzo was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2008. Mike Lowell is a cancer survivor.

My oldest brother was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and has been succesful so far in his battle with it. Very recently, a friend and former band mate was diagnosed with cancer and is going down fast. A current friend and band mate just lost his brother to cancer. I'm sure many of us know someone who has been stricken with this disease. For many years now, the Red Sox have been associated with The Jimmy Fund and The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and their quest to find a cure for this disease.

Cancer sucks.
