Bats, bats and more bats

Victor Martinez: 2/4, 1 RBI
Adrian Beltre: 3/4, 1 run scored
David Ortiz: 3/4, 1 HR, 3 RBI's, 2 runs scored
Jed Lowrie: 3/4, 2 HR's, 3 RBI's, 2 runs scored

The Red Sox beat the Mariners tonight behind the bats of Martinez, Beltre, Ortiz, and Lowrie. It's a good thing they brought their lumber, as Dice-K (Mr. Hyde version tonight) went 6 innings, allowed 8 hits, walked 4, struck out only 3, and gave up 5 runs.

The score see-sawed a bit before the Sox took the lead for good in the top of the 9th inning. Okajima pitched a scoreless 2/3 of an inning. He has allowed only 1 run in his 8 appearances, 5.2 innings, since returning from the DL. Bowden gave up a hit to the only batter he saw. Newcomer Hill faced only batter, got him out, and got the W for the game. Bard earned his 30th Hold, before Papelbon came in for the 9th inning. He gave up 2 hits and 1 run before striking out 3 in a row.

The Yankees and the Rays are beating the snot out of each other, the Yankees taking tonight's game 8-7 over the Rays. The Sox are still not mathematically out of reach of a playoff spot, yet time grows razor thin. They are 7 GB the Yankees in 1st place, and 6.5 GB the Rays for the playoff spot. The White Sox are 8 GB the Rays for the wild card.
