Clay Buchholz and Matt Garza were locked in a pitcher's duel tonight.
Buchholz: 7.1 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts
Garza: 7 IP, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts
In the 8th inning, Joaquin Benoit surrendered to the mighty bat (of late) of Victor Martinez, as V-Mart mashed another tater, his 3rd of the 1st 2 games of this series with Tampa, giving the Sox a 2-1 lead. Martinez has 10 hits in his last 4 games. BJ Upton tied it up in the bottom of that inning with a lead-off home run, which led to Doubront and Bard pitching a scoreless 1.2 innings. Atchison then gave up a lead-off walk-off home run to the light hitting (.149 BA) Dan Johnson in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Sigh. And to think that Yankee fans were probably rooting for the Sox to win. The Yankees won today. They remain tied with the Rays for 1st place, while the Red Sox are back to 5.5 GB again.
Besides the 10 hits the Sox put up, Buchholz's gem, V-Mart's home run, and his throwing out Longoria trying to steal as highlights of the game, add to that list this spectacular catch by Ryan Kalish in centerfield to rob Upton of a certain double, if not a triple. This catch will definitely be one of the top web gems of the season, if not THE gem of the season on ESPN's 'Web Gems.' I guarantee you will watch this one more than once!
