Josh Beckett was looking the like his old self again all the way into the 7th inning. After 6.1 innings and 91 pitches, he had allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, while registering 7 strikeouts. Then he reverted to the Josh Beckett we have seen for much of this season. Two home runs, a single, and three runs scored sent Beckett to the bench in favor of Daniel Bard. Bard came in for 1.2 innings to notch his 28th hold for the season, and Pap came in for the 9th, a 1-2-3 inning, and notched his 32nd save of the season and lowering his ERA back under the 3.00 mark. A 4 run 6th inning sent former Red Sox pitcher David Pauley scurrying for the showers. Darnell McDonald added an insurance run in the 8th inning with an RBI single.
The 2nd game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 7:10 PM (EDT) with a doozy of a pitcher's a likely possible as Felix Hernandez (9-10, 2.91 ERA) takes the mound for Seattle. Jon Lester (13-8, 3.26 ERA) will be looking to rebound from a horrendous start against Toronto on August 20th when he was knocked out of the game in the 3rd inning after allowing 9 runs before registering 1 out in the 3rd inning.
